During our one-week engagement, we scanned and analyzed a set of 80TB of a client’s Tier 1 storage, a total of 87.8 million files. Of those files:
- 50.4 million were aged past 7 years, 16.1 million were aged past 15 years
- 2.2 million were trivial
- 21.2 million were copies of data
- 31k items with risk indicators were set to Open Access
The insights revealed that a large amount of the data they were paying to store on expensive Tier 1 storage and additionally to back up, had not been accessed in over 2 years and contained a lot of ROT and copies – deeming it inefficient for this top tier storage.
There were also over 31,000 items relating to data privacy/compliance, financial, and legal/IP that had permissions set to Open Access, a cause for security and compliance concerns.
Our accompanying TCO calculation applied their sample data to their total Tier 1 data, revealing that by taking actions to clean up and archive, the client could achieve 69% infrastructure cost savings over 3 years.
